City to begin flushing water system May 9
The city of Rhinelander Water Utility will be flushing the city’s water distribution system beginning May 9. The city flushes hydrants to clean out iron deposits in the lines, to verify hydrants are working properly and to assure safe drinking water.
Flushing typically takes place 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and will take approximately three weeks. Flushing may produce discoloration in the water supply due to disruption of mineral deposits. These sediments are naturally occurring and are not harmful. The annual maintenance of the water system minimizes the sediment that can accumulate over time.
Once the hydrant flushing is complete water quality will improve. Before doing laundry or other projects that may suffer from discolored water, make sure the water is running clear from a cold-water faucet. If discoloration is observed, additional flushing may be required. After flushing each area is complete, it is recommended users in that area run cold tap water to purge any sediment in their private lines. This could occur on multiple days depending on the location of the property.
