Boys, girls basketball win in Antigo

ANTIGO – Antigo hosted both the boys and girls basketball teams Tuesday night in conference matchups. The boys started out a little slow but made some shots. Sophomore Will Gretzinger made four 3-pointers in the first half that helped the Hodags have a 30-15 half time lead.

The second half was not as good for the Hodags as play was not crisp and Antigo out scored Rhinelander in the second half 34-29 but it was not enough as the Hodags took the 10 point win 59-49. Top scorers for the Hodags were Will Gretzinger and Jackson Zettler with 15, followed by Ryan Jamison with 14.

The second game of the double header featured the girls, who  were hoping to make it a clean sweep at Antigo as all the JV teams and the boys varsity had already won their games.

The girls finished off the sweep with a 34-point margin of victory.

The game started slowly especially for Antigo as the Rhinelander full court pressure forced some turnovers. Some of those the Hodags capitalized on but too many resulted in missed opportunities. Even with that the Hodags held a 32-19 edge at the half. Antigo’s junior forward Sophie Schlieve presented problems for the Hodags as she had 10 of the Red Robins 19 points at the half and scored 10 more in the second half to score almost half of the Robins points.

Schlieve was the high scorer for the game with 20 and also had 16 rebounds even though she sat out a large stretch of the first half in foul trouble.

The Hodags got into a better rhythm in the second as they won the game 75-41. High scorer for the Hodags was Audrey Schieck with 17 followed by Ava Lamers with 16 and with 11 apiece were Brynn Brzycki and Lily Treder. Coach Clark was able to play the whole bench in the game for some meaningful minutes due to the score. BOB MAINHARDT PHOTOS.
