The Hodag girls basketball team played games on Monday and Tuesday this week. The team first travelled to Tomahawk to play the Hatchets and then welcomed Medford to the Rhinelander gym on Tuesday.

The full court pressure defense forced 38 turnovers, compared to Tomahawks 30 points. The Hodags scored 46 points off the turnovers. Rebecca Lawrence led all scorers with 29 points as the Hodags had two more in double digits with Annika Johnson scoring 12 and Kat Metropulos chipping in 10. The Hodags Held a 44-10 halftime lead and then allowed the Hatchets to double that for a final score of 70-30.

Tuesday night the girls were back at home facing a Medford team that had knocked off previously unbeaten Mosinee just last week. Mosinee defeated the Hodags soundly the first time they played this season so on paper it did not look good for the Hodags, which is why you play the games. The play was very physical as the officials were not calling many fouls and it was a tight first half as the score went into half time 20-18 in the Hodags’ favor.

The second half was more of the same with the Hodags opening up a lead that was only one point at the 5.3 second mark as Rebecca Lawrence went to the free throw line for two attempts and made them both to give the home team a 3-point advantage.

A last second shot by Medford’s Bryn Fronk was not a target as Lawrence grabbed the rebound and dribbled out the clock for the 41-38 win. Rebecca Lawrence led all scorers with 34 points and is 21 away from 1,000 for her career. The Hodag defense, mainly Ella Schiek, held Medford’s leading scorer Marissa Fronk to 6 points, while sophomore Martha Miller led Medford with 8 points. Photos by Bob Mainhardt.
