Area students, teachers win Kohl awards

Two Northwoods high school seniors have been named Herb Kohl Educational Foundation scholarship recipients and two Northwoods teachers have been selected as Herb Kohl Educational Foundation teacher fellows.

Holly Puza of Rhinelander and Aubrey Anderson of Hazelhurst are among 193 graduating seniors to win $10,000 Student Excellence Scholar awards. Students are evaluated on leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement and academic achievement, the ability to articulate goals in several stated categories, as well as the content of three letters of recommendation.

As teacher fellowship recipients, Rhinelander High School business education teacher Patrick Kubeny and Lakeland Union High School physical education and health teacher Mary Wendtland will each receive a $6,000 prize and their schools will be given matching $6,000 awards.

Award winners are selected following a process involving nominations and applications.

The recipients will attend a recognition luncheon and award program April 26 in Eau Claire.
