Local election season begins

Candidates for common council and county board announced
By Lori Adler, reporter
January 7 was the deadline for filing for candidacy for Rhinelander Common Council and Oneida County Board of Supervisors seats up for re-election this year. Common council seats for odd-numbered districts (1, 3, 5, 7) and all county board seats are on the ballot for the April 7 election.
As of the January 7 deadline, however, two city alderpersons (George Kirby, District 1 and Dawn Rog, District 5) and one county board supervisor (Lance Krolcyzk, District 18) had not filed declarations of candidacy or non-candidacy. Consequently, the filing deadline for those three seats was held open for an additional 72 hours, with the new deadline being 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10.
Once all deadlines had passed, the following candidates were announced.
Candidates for Rhinelander Common Council
District 1: Thomas Barnett *This seat was formerly held by George Kirby*
District 3: Lee Emmer (incumbent), Carrie Mikalauski
District 5: Gerald Anderson, Jason Daily, Wil Losch *This seat was formerly held by Dawn Rog*
District 7: Eileen Daniel, Bill Freudenberg *This seat was formerly held by Steve Sauer*
Due to the fact that three candidates have filed for the District 5 seat, a primary election is required for that seat. The primary is scheduled for February 18 and will be used to narrow the candidates down to two. All newly-elected alderpersons will be sworn in and begin their four-year terms at the organizational common council meeting on April 14.
Candidates for Oneida County Board of Supervisors
District 1: Sonny Paszak (incumbent)
District 2: Tom Kelly (incumbent)

District 10: Jim Winkler (incumbent), Bob Metropulos
District 11: Robb W. Jensen (incumbent), Robert J. Thome Jr.

District 18: OPEN *This seat was formerly held by Lance Krolczyk*
District 19: Robert Almekinde (incumbent)

Though no candidate filed for the District 18 seat, it is still possible for someone to file as a write-in candidate. If there are no write-in candidates, the county board chairman will appoint someone to the seat, who will be confirmed at the county board meeting on April 21. All newly elected supervisors will be sworn in at that same April meeting and will officially begin their two-year terms as of that date.
