wipe out winter hazards by keeping meters, appliance vents clear
With multiple inches of snow and ice covering much of the Northwoods, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) is reminding customers to clear snow and ice off natural gas meters and appliance vents.
A buildup of ice or snow on a meter can stress its piping, potentially causing a natural gas leak. It’s also more difficult for WPS mechanics to work on meters when they are covered with snow or ice. Customers should clear large icicles or sheets of ice on roofs that are above meters to prevent the ice from falling and damaging the equipment.
How to protect a meter:
- Clear away snow using a broom or hands
- Remove icicles from the roof above the meter
- Use caution around the meter when shoveling or using a snowblower
- Install a protective structure over the meter. Contact WPS for information on how
Along with keeping meters clear, customers should remove snow or ice from appliance vents, to prevent carbon monoxide from being trapped indoors and creating a hazardous situation.
Anyone smelling a natural gas odor should leave the area immediately and contact WPS at 800-450-7280.
