The School District of Rhinelander sent six athletes to the state Special Olympics Track and Field competition held in Stevens Point on June 7-8. This marks the 40th year that the state games have been held at the UW-Stevens Point campus. The athletes remained true to the Special Olympics oath, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Five out of the six athletes finished the day with a medal. Gold medals were given to Miguel Gonzalez and Gabe White in the shot put, Marshall Barlowski in the mini jav and Maria Dornfeld in the softball throw. Stephen Herrmann brought home a silver medal with his second place finish in the mini jav. Gabe White also placed sixth respectively in his division for the mini jav. Nevaeh Johnson also placed fourth in the 100 meter run. All of the athletes practiced hard throughout the season and are looking forward to gearing up for the bowling season in the fall.
