New disc golf course opening in September

The Rookery Run disc golf course, part of the Newbold Outdoor Recreation Area, will be open for play Saturday, Sept. 15. The 34-acre course has been under development for nearly three years. NORA committee chair Pete Cody said the project was completed with the help of many volunteers.

“It has been a lot of work, but couldn’t be more pleased with the disc course playable for the novice to those aspiring to be champions,” Cody said. Over 2,600 hours were donated to the project.

Sponsorships of the 18 holes, 14 benches, grants and donations resulted in over $42,000 raised to construct the course with a hiking and walking trail encircling the course.

“There are sponsor signs at each hole, on benches and directional signs throughout the course,” Cody said. “There is also signage to alert disc players to the three milkweed patches that are part of the nationally recognized Monarch Watch program.”

Rookery Run is located on Ole Lake Road, about seven miles from Rhinelander, north on HWY 47. The grand opening is set for Saturday, Oct. 6. Commemorative discs and T-shirts will be for sale.
