Bird club focuses on bats

A presentation on bats will be featured at the Aug. 20 meeting of the Nicolet Bird Club of Three Lakes. Local bat conservationist Joel Knutson will speak about “learning from the disappearance of our Northwoods neighbors,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Three Lakes American Legion.

Knutson’s interest in citizen science goes back to his childhood when he was introduced to Ranger Rick and never grew out of it. From there his love of the outdoors expanded and, in recent years, has brought him into the world of bats.

Providing people with information, and getting them interested in bats, has become a passion for Knutson, who believes it does not take a large group of people to affect change.

Knutson will discuss ways which individual home owners can make positive impacts, measurable changes where they live. Attendees will gain a greater understanding that changes, just on their own piece of property, can mean great things to bats and other animals.

Anyone who is concerned about the diminishing bat population, enjoys the sport of bird watching, or is interested in ways to attract bats to their property is invited to attend. For more information, contact Bill at 715-891-5084 or on Facebook.
