Rhinelander’s American Legion baseball team wrapped up the season this weekend by hosting the regional championship games at Stafford Field. Teams included Antigo, Shawano and Northwoods, which consists of players from Crandon, Three Lakes and Eagle River.
Antigo was the eventual regional champion and advances to the state tournament in Baraboo beginning later this week.
Rhinelander began play by facing Antigo, the regional favorite. Too many mistakes and not enough timely hitting cost the Rebels in their 8-6 loss in the opening game Saturday.
Due to the rearranged schedule, forced by the rainout of Friday’s games, the Rebels were to take on the loser of the first game of the day, Northwoods.
Again the inability to come up with a timely base hit set the tone in the first inning, as the Rebels had the bases loaded with one out and could not score.
Northwoods was able to push across a run in the second inning and three more in the fourth inning while the Rebels could only score two in the sixth to absorb the 4-2 loss and end their season in the double elimination tournament.
