STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Lakeland Area Republican Women’s Club delivered red, white and blue totes to Frederick Place recently, filled with necessities from the temporary housing wish list. Club member Nancy Field said she got the idea for the donations after Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing Executive Director Tammy Modic spoke at a club meeting.

“She told us about all the successes and hard work,” Field said. “The accomplishments sold us and we decided we wanted to do something,” adding that Modic’s passion for the organization was “just phenomenal.”

Items including clothes and dishwashing detergents, soaps, zip lock bags, paper towels and other basics. Modic said when they have extra household donations, the staff sends what they can with the client as they move into a more permanent place to live.

“We’ve got a standard (wish list) they fill out and if we’ve got extra, great, but we have to cover the house first, but if we have extra, we’ll send it with them,” Modic said.

Field said she gave the club members a month to fill the bags and bring them back, adding, “we want to give back to the community and be good stewards.”
