Johnson named GNC player of the year

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander tennis team won the Great Northern Conference meet Friday, making this year’s seniors the first class to win a conference championship all four years, “since I don’t know when, but it’s a long time ago,” said coach Bob Heideman.

Markus Johnson defeated Antigo’s Tanner Stueck 6-4, 6-3 and Medford’s Alec Shear, 6-3, 6-3 to become the conference champion at No. 1 singles and was named conference player of the year, an honor which Heideman said was “well deserved.”

After a loss to Ashland earlier in the week, Heideman said the team came out on a mission Friday.

“We hit on all cylinders today, and that was led by our five seniors,” he added.
They had some close sets but came out okay.

“Freddy had to put together a streak of 11 straight points to pull out his last set,” Heideman noted. “Cade and Logan had a close set in the semis and Grant and Jared played perhaps their best set of the year in their last set.”

The final team standings had the Hodags on top with 134 points, Medford and Pacelli tied for second with 81, followed by Lakeland, 64, and Antigo with 25 points.
