Eight Rhinelander Swim Club members competed in Wisconsin State Championship meets recently. To compete at this level, swimmers must have met a qualifying time in their event. Athletes competing were Joseph Heck, 15; Thaddeus Heck, 15; Makenna Winnicki, 15; Lisa Kennedy, 14; Jack Antonuk, 13; Abi Winnicki, 11; Samson Shinners, 10; and Brock Arrowood, 10.

“Having eight kids qualify for state is something RSC hasn’t done in a very long time,” said head coach Megan Cihla. “I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of their successes and all they have achieved this season. Half of these athletes are bottom of their age group so qualifying for state wasn’t something they were even expecting to do. This just shows the versatility of these athletes and how wonderfully talented they are when they set goals for themselves.”

There were two RSC records broken at the meet. Abi Winnicki broke the 50-yard butterfly record that had been in place since 1991 with her time of 29.25. Jack Antonuk broke the 100-yard butterfly record with his time of 59.74.

Next up for the club is the Midwest Regional meet April 7 and 8.
