Viewpoint: Reader supports Burns for Justice

Editor,
For far too long we have had a Wisconsin Supreme Court that has allowed the erosion of the basic principles of democracy.

Wisconsin suffers from the most extreme partisan gerrymandering in the country. It is a known fact that the Republicans have used sophisticated methods to manipulate the redistricting process so that they are greatly over-represented in the legislature.

Vote suppression also has run rampant, and Wisconsin has one of the country’s most restrictive voter ID laws. Studies have shown that this policy has suppressed the ability of thousands of our citizens to exercise their basic right to vote. And that has been the goal, because those most affected are the ones most likely to vote against Walker and the Republicans in the legislature.

Our court has said all that is okay; so we need to elect justices to the Supreme Court that will uphold the basic principles of democracy: the right to vote and one-person one-vote. We need justices who will protect our democracy.

That is why we need to elect Tim Burns to the Supreme Court. There is a primary on Feb. 20. That vote is crucial, as the person elected in the general election on April 3 will serve a 10-year term.

If you want to bring back an authentic democracy to Wisconsin, vote for Tim Burns on Feb. 20.
David Barnhill, Hazelhurst
