RHS improves to 15-8 overall

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team did all the scoring with more than twice the shots on goal Thursday night when the Hodags won in non-conference action at home against Merrill/Wausau East, 4-0.

“It was Senior Night and a really nice tribute to our seniors – Sam Rhode, Nick Sandstrom, Matthias Schneider and Cole Spaulding,” said RHS head coach MJ Laggis. “All four of them were in the starting lineup and Matthias and Cole both scored.”

Schneider tallied the Hodags’ first goal unassisted 2:39 into the game with Spaulding also scoring unassisted 5:06 into the first period for a 2-0 lead.

RHS extended its lead to three goals when Bridger Flory scored 7:46 into the second period assisted by Harlan Wojtusik. Flory added the Hodags’ final goal on a power play when he scored 6:23 into the third period assisted by Danny Zuiker and Abe Laggis.

Shots on goal favored RHS, 37-17, with Seth Stafford recording the shutout win in net. Caleb McCorkle made 33 saves in a losing effort in goal for the Bluejacks.

“We didn’t play our best game, but we certainly did what we had to to take care of the game,” MJ Laggis said.” I am happy for our players getting their 15th win.”

The win improved the Hodags’ overall season record to 15-8 going into Friday night’s regular-season finale at home against Mosinee. RHS and the Indians are scheduled to face each other again Tuesday night when they open WIAA tournament play at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
