RHS improves to 14-8 overall

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

Two second-period goals turned out to be the difference Tuesday night when the Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team won in non-conference action at Marshfield, 4-2.

“We really had a solid game and played pretty well,” said Hodags head coach M.J. Laggis. “Very proud of the team…. Marshfield is really a class act and it was a fun game to play considering the travel distance on a Tuesday night.”

RHS scored first just over 4 minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Bridger Flory. The Tigers then tied things up at the 13:19 mark when Ben Bauer scored assisted by Ryan Krueger.

The Hodags did all the scoring in the second period. Freddy Wisner put RHS back in the lead 1:55 into the period with a goal assisted by Abe Laggis. Conor Pequet scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 6:05 mark assisted by Brandon Kolasa.

The Hodags took a three-goal lead 9:40 into the final period when Harlan Wojtusik scored assisted by Pequet. Marshfield tallied its final goal with less than 2 minutes left in the game when Krueger scored assisted by Nate Boson.

Seth Stafford stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced to record the win in goal for RHS. A.J. Trierweiler made 12 saves in a losing effort in net for the Tigers.

The Hodags improved their overall season record to 14-8 and are also 7-5 in the Great Northern Conference going into Thursday non-conference home game against Merrill/Wausau East. RHS also plays a league game Friday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena against Mosinee to close out the regular season before those two teams will face each other again there next Tuesday to open WIAA tournament play.
