HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Hodags 6th in ‘Battle on the Bay’

DeMeyer, Kurtz finish 1st

The Rhinelander High School wrestling team competed Saturday in the “Battle on the Bay” tournament at Bay Port High School and finished sixth out of 25 teams with 329 points.
Luxemburg-Casco had the top score of 468.5, followed by Mukwonago (441.5), De Pere (370) Wrightstown (360) and Denmark (338.5) rounding out the top five.
The Hodags had two individual champions with Jacob DeMeyer winning all five of his matches at 152 pounds and Alec Kurtz also going 5-0 at 195. DeMeyer won his championship match with a 3-2 decision over Sparta’s Brett Von Ruden, while Kurtz picked up a 19-10 major decision victory in his title match against Appleton North’s Brock Danielski.
RHS recorded two other top-three individual finishes with Reuben Guzik placing runner-up at 120 pounds and Colton Krueger finishing third at 220. Both ended up with 4-1 records on the day.
Three more Hodags finished in the top 10 with Tyler Olson (126) placing fifth, Tim Fox (106) coming in sixth and Trevor Knapp (285) ending up 10th.
Up next for RHS is a Great Northern Conference dual meet Thursday at Tomahawk.
