Police and Fire Commission opposes changing RPD residency rule
Police officers must reside within 15 miles, 20 minutes of city limits

The effort to attract new police officers to Rhinelander won’t include changing the residency rule to allow officers to live farther away from the city limits.
Rhinelander’s Police and Fire Commission agreed Tuesday to continue to require police officers to reside within 15 miles or 20 minutes of the jurisdictional boundaries of the city, said commission chairman Todd McEldowney.
“We want them active members of our community,” McEldowney said.
Upon new police officers being hired, McEldowney noted they are now required to meet the residency requirement before the completion of their one-year probationary period.
To attract new officers to Rhinelander, McEldowney said brochures have been put together to provide to police academy graduates. He also noted the commission is holding off filling an officer vacancy in the police department until after the first of next year to allow people attending police academies to graduate in December.
