RHS drops to 0-2 in GNC, 1-4 overall

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School varsity football team was soundly defeated in Friday’s “Bell Game” at Mike Webster Stadium.

The Hodags, who gave up six first-half touchdowns and didn’t get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, lost to Great Northern Conference rival Antigo, 48-7.

The Red Robins, who led RHS 42-0 at halftime, literally ran all over the Hodags in the first half.

Antigo scored three first-quarter rushing touchdowns of 64 yards by Jericho Kelly, 30 yards by Adam Schmidt and 40 yards by Matt Winter.

The Red Robins ran into the end zone three times from short range in the second quarter with Schmidt scoring on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs and Winter closing out the half with a 2-yard touchdown run.

After a scoreless third quarter, Antigo scored its final touchdown with 8:08 left to play on a 3-yard run by Clayton Miller.

The Hodags scored their only touchdown with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard pass from Logan Freund to Reese Flores.

The Red Robins outgained the Hodags in total offense, 382-200 yards, with 344 of Antigo’s yardage coming on the ground and RHS tallying 138 rushing yards.

Of the nine Red Robins with at least one rushing attempt, Kelly led the team in yardage with 128 yards on eight carries. The Hodags were led in rushing by Drake Martin with 79 yards on 19 carries.

The two teams completed only seven passes between them. Winter had two completions in five throws for 38 yards. Freund completed five of 15 passes for 62 yards.

RHS, which last defeated Antigo in 2006, now has a season record of 0-2 in the GNC and 1-4 overall going into next Friday’s conference game at Mosinee.
