GIRLS SWIMMING: Hodags edge Medford, improve to 2-0 in GNC

The Rhinelander High School girls swimming team improved its Great Northern Conference dual meet record to 2-0 Thursday with an 86-84 victory at Medford.

Two of the Hodags’ five first-place finishes came in the relay events with Lisa Kennedy, Marissa Martin, Makenna Winnicki and Jenna Hawley winning the 200-yard medley relay (2 minutes, 3.25 seconds) and Marisa McGuire, Taylor Macak, Grace Heck and Hawley topping the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.11).

RHS’s individual winners included: Winnicki, 200 freestyle (2:08.28) and 100 butterfly (1:06.52); and McGuire tying for first with Medford’s Avery Apfelbeck in the 50 freestyle (27.68).

Along with the runner-up finishes in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, the Hodag swimmers who individually placed second included: Kennedy, 500 freestyle (6:18.07) and 100 backstroke (1:05.22); Heck, 100 freestyle (1:00.05); and Hawley, 100 breaststroke (1:18.41).

In addition to another 200 freestyle relay team coming in third, RHS recorded third-place individual finishes from: Quinn, 100 backstroke (1:14.210 and 500 freestyle (6:18.94); Macak, 200 freestyle (2:20.51); Heck, 200 individual medley (2:31.6); McGuire, 100 freestyle (1:07.82).

The Hodags’ next meet is an invitational they will be hosting Saturday.
