STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School girls tennis team won Thursday for the sixth time this season in Great Northern Conference play in as many dual meets with a 4-3 victory at home over Antigo.

“This was a big match for us,” Hodags head coach Bob Heideman said of the dual meet victory that gives the team the only undefeated record in conference play.

RHS won three of the four singles matches with Alex Oestreich (No. 2), Emma Robert (No. 3) and Kenedy Van Zile (No. 4) each winning in straight sets. Oestreich defeated Ellie Kelly, 6-3, 7-6, Roberts bested Sam Belling, 6-4, 6-3, and Van Zile swept Adie Smith, 6-0, 6-0.

“The match may have hinged on Emma Roberts’s first-set comeback from a 1-4 deficit,” Heideman said.

The Hodags’ No. 3 doubles pair of Savannah Chartier and Jackie Wells won their match in straight sets over the Red Robins’ Jenna Lenzner and Julia Westen, 6-4, 6-2.

“Savannah and Jackie have a chemistry that works,” Heideman said. “First and foremost they never seem to let mistakes bother them, but are quick to recognize when one is made. Savannah is often the scrambler and Jackie the terminator on points.”

RHS, which improved its season record to 6-0 in the GNC and 11-3 overall, next plays in an invitational Saturday at Green Bay Southwest High School.
