STAR JOURNAL REPORT

After trailing by only a point at halftime Friday night, the Rhinelander High School varsity football team wasn’t able to score again and ended up losing its non-conference season opener at Prescott, 27-13.

The Cardinals scored first with 9:22 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run from Joe Schulte.

The Hodags tied the game at 7-7 with 1:05 left in the opening period when quarterback Logan Freund ran into the end zone from a yard away and the extra point was good.

Prescott regained the lead with 3:51 left before halftime on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jonah Anderson to Carson Stenroos. The extra point extended the lead to 14-7.

RHS pulled within a point with 1:01 left before halftime on a 17-yard touchdown run by Drake Martin. The Cardinals held on to a 14-13 lead at halftime after the extra point failed.

The Hodags continued to trail by only a point until the fourth quarter when Prescott added two touchdowns with a pair of scoring runs by Schulte from 4 and 3 yards away.

Prescott outgained RHS in total offensive yardage, 349-172, with the 290 of the Cardinals’ yards coming on the ground and the Hodags picking up 107 of their yards in the air. Schulte accounted for 177 of Prescott’s rushing yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns. Freund completed 10 of 27 passes for 107 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions, while Reuben Guzik led RHS in receiving with four catches for 60 yards.

The Hodags will seek their first win of the season next Friday when they play another non-conference game at Tomahawk.
