OBITUARY: Wallace Eugene Berg

Wallace Eugene Berg, age 83 of Rhinelander, died peacefully at home after spending the weekend with his brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Wally was born on May 27, 1933, in LaMoure, N.D., to Lloyd and Alice Marie Berg. He moved to Rhinelander with his family when he was young and graduated Rhinelander High School in 1951. As a young man, Wally joined the Air Force where he served his country for four years including active duty in Korea during the war.
Wally married Arlene Numerowski Aug. 1, 1964 in Half Day, Ill. Wally and Arlene then moved to Stevens Point as he obtained his bachelor of science degree and then to Madison to complete his masters degree at UW-Madison in water and flood plain management. Wally and his family then moved to Rhinelander when his children were young and have resided here since. Arlene passed away on November 28, 2012. Wally worked for the Department of Natural Resources, where he pursued his passion for the outdoors. Wally was an epic fisherman. He was also quite an accomplished pool player, and he was active in Rhinelander pool leagues all of his life. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, and traveling, especially road trips and spending time “up North” in Boulder Junction with his brothers and sisters and extended family. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and great grandchildren. He was a good cook and loved a party.
Wally is survived his two daughters, Lisa (Tim) Thorsen of Rhinelander, and Tamara (Jim Kofler) Berg of Rochester, Minn.; his grandchildren, Kylie, Kassi, Katrina, Cameron, Tyler and Alex and great-grandchildren, Jacksen, Mason and Grayson; his brothers, Thomas Lloyd and Jerry (Mary Ann), and his sisters, Sonja (Donny) Numerowski and Inez Horcher. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Wally had a zest for life and was much-loved and will be missed by all who knew him. At his request, no funeral services will be held. A celebration of life will take place on Aug. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Sammy Jr’s, 801 Coon Street. In honor of Wally, we hope you can stop by for a beer.
