Annual worm race attracts a crowd

BY EILEEN PERSIKE
EDITOR

The weather was warm and humid, construction vehicles rumbled by on the street and 120 youngsters and a handful of adults came out to race some worms. The 29th annual Great Library Worm Race, this year held next door to the Rhinelander District Library, was held Tuesday. Strategy went into selecting the racers – some wanted small worms so they would be faster; other children selected the longer worms, for the same reason. They were given names like Speedy, Mr. Tom, Donald Trump, Billy Bob and John. The races were held in several heats until it came down to the finals. In the end trophys were handed out to the top three teams. Everyone received treats, provided by the Northwoods Lion’s Club; Pizza Hut and Culvers also contributed prizes. Winners were:
First Place: Rivers & Vance Eagleson
Second Place: Emma Cottrell & Eva Vandlen
Third Place: Charlie & Evie Hyder
