Katie Detert to play forward for Huskies

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

When the St. Cloud State University women’s hockey team takes the ice this fall, one of the Huskies’ seven incoming players will be from Rhinelander.

Katie Detert, a 2016 RHS graduate, will also be one of five incoming forwards, joining Janna Haeg of Lakeville, Dana Rasmussen of Kasson, Kayla Friesen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Brooke Kurdika of Omaha, Neb. The two other incoming players include defenseman Rachel Herzog of Woodbury and goaltender Janine Alder from Switzerland.

“This year’s recruit class will make an immediate impact on our roster,” said SCSU head coach Eric Rud. “This group is going to add skill and depth on offense and defense and I look forward to them joining our team in 2016-17.”

Detert earned First-Team All-State honors three times playing for the Northern Edge co-op team.

A four-time All-Conference pick, Detert was named her conference’s player of theyear twice in high school.

“Katie (Detert) is a proven point producer, who will add to our offensive ability here at St. Cloud State,” Rud said. “We are very excited to have her join our team in 2016-17.”

Detert ranked among the state’s top 10 scorers throughout her high school career and is the record holder for points and goals on the Northern Edge team. She scored 126 goals and 62 assists over the last three years.

“The hockey atmosphere is just phenomenal here at St. Cloud,” Detert said of joining the Huskies. “The school definitely has lots of support for the hockey program which is awesome. The location was perfect for me and the beauty of the campus is amazing. I’m excited to come in and work with this high level group of athletes as well as the coaching staff.”

The Huskies will begin their 2016-17 season Sept. 23-24 with a pair of home games against Wisconsin at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
