LEGION BASEBALL: Rebels lead early, fall in final inning to RSW
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
The Rhinelander Rebels Legion baseball team led for most of Friday’s road game before giving up three runs in the bottom of the seventh and losing to Rothschild/Schofield/Weston, 7-6.
The Rebels scored first in the top of the second when Brandon Hess led off with a single and ended reaching home on an error.
Rhinelander extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth with three more runs after Brad Quade led off with a double and scored on a single from Owen White, who also scored after a 2-RBI single from Tait Spencer.
RSW pulled within a single run in the fourth inning after the first three batters tallied hits with Brady Uekert leading off with a triple and John Breske and Sam Nielson recording singles and also scoring.
Both starting pitchers left the mound after four innings. The Rebels’ starter, Easton Senoraske, gave up two earned runs out of the three scored on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. RSW’s Adam Budnick was charged for four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
RSW reliever Jordan Steinagel worked the final three innings and recorded the victory, giving up two earned runs on three hits with a walk while striking out three.
Rhinelander’s final two runs of the game were scored by Kurt Zuiker, who ended up with three hits, which included a double in the top of the first. In the fifth inning, Zuiker bunted his way on base and reached second on a wild pitch before scoring on a single from Quade. Zuiker tallied a single in the top of the seventh when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Comer.
Hess pitched two-plus innings in relief when he was charged for a pair of earned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jacob DeMeyer relieved Hess in the seventh inning and was an out away from putting the game in the win column for the Rebels, but then threw a wild pitch that brought in a run Hess was charged for before giving up an RBI double to Matt Schmidt and a walk-off RBI single to Sam Nielsen.
The loss dropped Rhinelander’s overall season record to 6-2 going into Monday night’s home game against Mosinee.
