Season ends for Hodag boys golf team; RHS 8th at sectional

The Rhinelander High School boys golf team closed out its season finishing at the back of the pack in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 Sectional at the Wild Ridge Golf Course in Eau Claire.
Of the eight teams competing, Eau Claire North had the top team score of 302 with Stevens Point (309) seven strokes behind in second place. Both teams qualify for the State Tournament set for June 6-7 at University Ridge in Madison.
Hudson (322) missed the cut for state by 13 strokes in third place, followed by Wausau East (328), River Falls (329) Eau Claire Memorial (337), Wausau West (344) and Rhinelander (359).
The top-three individuals not on one of the top-two teams also qualified for state. River Falls junior Blake Skogen had the top score of 72. Eau Claire North senior Matt Tolan and Wausau East junior tied for second at 73. Eau Claire North junior John Haselwander placed fourth at 74.
A tiebreaker decided the third and final individual state qualifier among two golfers carding a 75 for 18 holes when Marshfield junior Derek Michalski defeated Hudson senior Michaelem Selissen with a birdie on the playoff hole.
RHS’s top golfer for the tournament, senior Logan Johnson, tied for 13th with a 79. The other three Hodag golfers whose scores counted toward the team total included junior Matthew Reinthaler (91), sophomore Zachary Olds (93) and senior Alex Gaber (96). Freshman Alex Twite carded a 97.
