STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School girls track and field team wasn’t able to advance to state with any of its three entries in Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 Sectional at D.C. Everest.

The closest the Hodags came to qualifying for state with a top-three finish was senior Eva O’Melia placing fourth in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 20.71 seconds), 1.13 seconds behind the third-place finisher, Chippewa Falls senior Kathryn Webb. Stevens Point senior Abigail Hyland won the race in 2:18.24.

RHS sophomore Alayna Franson placed fifth in the 1600 run (5:30.91). Her pace was 13.08 seconds behind the third and final state qualifier, Eau Claire Memorial junior Hannah Roeske. Another runner from Eau Claire Memorial, senior Aubrey Roberts, finished first in 4:51.46.

The Hodags’ 4X800 relay comprised of O’Melia, Franson and juniors Payton Hartman and Gracie Quinn placed eighth in 10:48.48, more than a minute behind the third-place finish of Wausau West. Stevens Point won in 9:43.91.

In the team standings, the Hodags placed 14th with 10 points. Stevens Point won the team title at 130, followed by Hudson (102) and Eau Claire Memorial (77) rounding out the top three.

RHS SOFTBALL LOSES AT LOGAN

The No. 3-seeded Hodag girls softball team saw its season come to an end Friday in the WIAA Division 2 Regional finals with a 7-4 loss at No. 2-seeded La Crosse Logan.

RHS, which received an opening-round playoff bye before winning 8-5 in Wednesday’s rain-shortened regional semifinal against Medford, was also this year’s runner-up in the Great Northern Conference with a 10-2 league record.
