Obituary: Richard Douglas Butterfield

Richard Douglas Butterfield, age 84 of Rhinelander, died Friday, January 22, 2016, at his home and in the company of his family.  He was born June 27, 1931, in Rhinelander to Douglas and Florence (Samuelson) Butterfield.

Following graduation from Rhinelander High School, Dick joined the U.S. Navy where he served for four years. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Rhinelander and began his career with the Rhinelander Paper Company where he worked until his retirement in May of 1993.  He married Rosemary Fortier on June 11, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and together they raised their family of four daughters.

While in high school, Dick was very active in Hodag sports and he continued to referee games for many years. He enjoyed snowmobiling, golfing and playing cards with his friends, and Green Bay Packer games.

Dick is survived by his wife, Rosemary Butterfield of Rhinelander; three daughters, Vicki Butterfield of Centreville, Virginia, Kristi Jacobson of Panama City, Florida and Jeanne (Pat) Wilson of Rhinelander; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lola Obey of Green Bay and Sally (Ralph) Davison of Lansing, Michigan, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Susie Cuirro.

A memorial mass for Dick will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church / St. Mary’s site with Father Kevin Farrell officiating.  (Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is assisting with arrangements and condolences to the family may be directed at www.carlsonfh.com.
