UPDATE: The 50-year old man killed in Merrill was Marcus Wydeven of Tomahawk, a 20 year Lincoln County Highways Department worker. The driver of the vehicle who struck Wydeven as he was flagging southbound traffic on State Road 17 was 84-year old Mary Robinson of Antigo. Both were transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital, where Wydeven was pronounced dead. Robinson was transferred to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, and remained there with non-life threatening injuries at the time of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday at approximately 2:30 p.m., an 84-year-old female driver from Antigo allegedly struck a Lincoln County Highway Dept. worker who was flagging southbound traffic on State Highway 17 north of Smith Road in Merrill. The 50-year-old worker, who was reportedly holding a stop sign up at the time, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital.

The Antigo driver, whose car flipped into the ditch, rolling several times, was also taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with “unknown injuries,” and State Highway 17 was shut down for nearly five hours. The crash is still under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s department.
