Obituary: Gladys Johnson

Gladys Johnson, age 95, of Harshaw, died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Grace Lodge in Rhinelander. She was born on June 23, 1919, in Rhinelander to Allen Ward and Frances Loretta (Cartwright) Sterling. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Karan (Jay) Shaffer of Fairfax, Virginia; three grandchildren, Kristen (Thomas) Harwood of Oak Hill, Virginia, Michael Shaffer and Robert Shaffer, both of Fairfax, Virginia; two great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Slater of Janesville and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Johnson; a sister, Dorothy Bennett; and two brothers, Leslie and Raymond Sterling. A funeral service for Gladys will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 13 at the Carlson Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery in the Town of Cassian. For those who would wish to honor her, memorials in Gladys’ name may be made to either First Congregational United Church of Christ or Friends of the Rhinelander Animal Shelter.
