Business Close Up: Touching Hearts Home Care
November is National Home Care & Hospice Month. It’s a month to “honor the millions of nurses, home care aides… who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve,” according to the National Association for Home Care website, “and play a central role in our health care system.”
The Northwoods is fortunate to be able to include Touching Hearts Home Care among the ranks of Home Care workers who make a positive difference every day in the lives of their clients.
Touching Hearts Home Care, LLC has provided in-home care since June, 2013. Owners Wanita Cook, Jane Bronk, and Samantha Hunter have a combined 75 years of health care experience. They also employ a staff of six full-time, and four part-time caregivers- all of them licensed, trained and insured. They serve Oneida, Lincoln, Forest and Vilas Counties.
“We are certified CNAs and have been trained for medication administration,” said Samantha, who is mostly responsible for running the office. “We can do mostly everything that can be done in a nursing home or assisted living but in the comfort of their own homes.”
Friends, Wanita and Jane started the business in Wanita’s home, after deciding it would be nice to work for themselves.
“We started with two clients, and now we have 37,” Wanita said. “The spare bedroom we worked from became too cramped, and was too small for staff meetings so we found a location downtown with enough space to meet our needs.”
Touching Hearts staff helps clients with such things as daily living activities, light housekeeping, personal care, laundry and meals, but they go beyond the routine.
“Sometimes we are there to socialize, provide a break for the other caregivers, take them shopping and keep the client, or the client’s spouse company,” said Wanita. “When extended family is far away, we become family for the clients, and the clients become ours. We have a fantastic staff that goes the extra mile.”
When asked what makes their employees such great caregivers, Samantha and Wanita respond without hesitation that it’s their compassion and desire to make life easier.
“We have individuals working for us from the ages of twenty to fifty. Some of them are going to school to be nurses or maybe they took care of a family member who was ill,” said Samantha. “But they all value home life and work hard to make sure their clients spend as much time at home as possible.”
