First Person: Hodag Musky Challenge a big fall event for the chamber
The Hodag Musky Challenge (HMC) kicks off later this month on several area lakes. We talked with Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Events Coordinator Tina Elvins about the importance of this annual tournament, and what participants can expect this year.
Buyers’ Guide: When does the HMC take place?
Tina Elvins: The tournament takes place September 19-21, with registration Friday night at the Quality Inn from 6-9 p.m. Fishing begins Saturday morning. Participants can register in advance online at explorerhinelander.com, and can choose from one of five lake groups to fish. So far, we are slightly above where registrations were at this time last year.
BG: What is new or different this year?
TE: We are offering anyone in the tournament the chance to win $250 if they catch a musky of any size. All that is required is that they take a photo of themselves, wearing their tournament hats, holding the fish. The legal size is 40” so anything under 40” can still be a winner. There is a drawing at the end of each fishing day for a winner from all submissions.
BG: Why is this an important event for the Rhinelander community?
TE: This is a tournament that the fishermen and women look forward to each year. It draws anglers from different states to our area where they enjoy our lakes, stay at the area resorts and dine in local restaurants. Because of this tournament’s long history, musky fishing enthusiasts schedule their vacations around it which means a good time for them and an economic boost for the community.
BG: Are there volunteer opportunities if anyone is interested?
TE: We are still in need of volunteers for a few of the lake stations. These volunteers will measure the fish and check the boars as they come in to the lake stations. We are also needing people to sell raffle tickets Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
