See Me Tri Triathlon Aug. 9 in Minocqua
The See Me Tri Triathlon will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8 a.m. on Clear Lake in Minocqua.
The swim, bike and run courses will challenge athletes among the woods and waters of the scenic Northwoods. The triathlon offers both sprint and Olympic distances for teams or individuals. A brief overview on distances follows:
Sprint
• Swim: 500m
• Bike: 20km (12.4 miles)
• Run: 5km (3.1 miles)
Olympic
• Swim: 1500m (.93 miles)
• Bike: 40km (24.8 miles)
• Run 10km (6.2 miles)
“This is our fifth annual running of the triathlon,” said Andrew Teichmiller, Chequamegon Adventure Company, one of the race’s founders. “Every year we have seen huge growth in participation. We are hoping to see nearly 400 athletes at this year’s race.”
Beth Wetzler, Minocqua Area Chamber community events coordinator, says there is an even bigger benefit: the economic impact on the community. “Especially for retailers, restaurants, and hospitality, 75 percent of the triathletes come from well over one hour away. Factor in their family and friends who will be consuming lodging, meals, gas, shopping and tourist spending. This is a great event for the whole community!
“Whether you’re interested in watching the pros, cheering on a friend or just experiencing a triathlon, this event offers a spectator-friendly course,” Teichmiller explained. “All three legs of the race can be viewed within walking distance of the swim start, and there will be plenty of room for your family and friends at the event finish and post-race party.”
The swim takes place at Clear Lake picnic area, with the start/finish located adjacent to the beach. After exiting the swim, triathletes will follow the lakefront path to the transition area where bikes will be awaiting the riders. Bikers will enter Cty. J and bike to Cty. E (the sprint turns near Gilmore Creek), then will ride a short distance on Cty. D near the Wisconsin River and Rainbow Flowage before traveling down Gypsy Lake Road. Athletes will then rack their bikes, put on their running shoes and head toward the Raven Trail. The sprint runners’ course is entirely on the Raven Trail. After the Raven Trail, the Olympic runners will enter Woodruff Road, then continue on to Fish Hatchery Road and Cty. J bike lane before heading back to the finish line.
Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care have teamed up again to be co-title sponsors for the See Me Tri Minocqua Triathlon.
“One of the reasons that we support the See Me Tri Minocqua Triathlon is that it raises funds for many worthy organizations in our community,” said Dr. Michael Schaars, Marshfield Clinic Minocqua Center Medical Director. “Over the past five years the triathlon has donated over $35,000 supporting the community charities that make our area stronger.”
“We have a vested interest in promoting healthy lifestyles and we also have associates who take part in this terrific community event,” said Amy Lavin, nurse practitioner, Ministry Medical Group Woodruff clinic. “The See Me Tri Triathlon is another great way community members and visitors can engage in healthy activities.”
