Artists from the across the country will have their finest work on display in the Nicolet College Art Gallery when the Northern National Art Competition kicks off with an opening reception Tuesday, July 22, at 5 p.m.
Judge Linda Benedict-Jones, curator of photography at the Carnegie Museum of Art, selected 87 of the 512 pieces into the juried exhibit.
“There’s a little dance that takes place,” she said about the judging process. “I try to keep a very open mind when I begin the process. With photographs as well as other media–whether it is oil paintings, watercolors, lithographs, fabric arts and more–I respond positively to what strikes me as somewhat uncommon. ‘Show me something I haven’t seen before’ is what I would often say to my students.”
Tickets for the opening reception, which Benedict-Jones will attend, are $18. This includes a light buffet and beverages. Tickets for the reception can be purchased at Lattitudes, 61 N. Brown Street, and Diane’s Frame Shoppe, 6 N. Brown St., both in downtown Rhinelander. Tickets are also available at the School of the Arts in Rhinelander and by contacting Tom Winquist at 715-362-6988 or by email at tomwin@newnorth.net.
Artists with pieces selected for the show will compete for more than $8,500 in prize money.
Several Northwoods artists and others in the state had works selected for the show. These include Christine Alfery, Lac du Flambeau, Marilyn Annin, Land O’Lakes, CathyJean Clark, Neillsville, Tim Feathers, Schofield, Tim Johnson, Rhinelander, Janice Kanyusik, Rhinelander, Kitty Kingston, Marshfield, Cindy Martin, Deerfield, Joanne Nock Olsen, Lake Tomahawk, Patrick Plunkett, Wausau, Dani Schafer, Antigo, Sheila Stilin, Rhinelander, and Gale Willcox, Rhinelander.
After the reception admission is free to the exhibit, which runs through Sept. 12.
The gallery is in the Learning Resources Center on the Nicolet College Campus, one mile south of Rhinelander just off of Hwy. G.
