Our Turn: Honor Flight

What if you had a chance to see something you never thought you’d be able to see? Do something you never thought you’d be able to do?

The Honor Flight Network is an amazing organization dedicated to making the dreams of World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans a reality. The Honor Flight Network is an organization that helps veterans from all over the United States fly to see the memorials in Washington D.C.

That’s the amazing feeling these heroes get when they set foot in Washington D.C. The Honor Flight is committed to fulfill their dreams and help them travel absolutely free.

One feature of the Honor Flight experience is Mail Call. Mail Call replicates that time in service when the soldiers would receive letters from the home front. Honor Flight organizers work to present participants with letters on the flight.

These letters can come from family, friends or even perfect strangers; anyone who wants to share their gratitude with the men and women who served our country. When our principal brought up the idea of writing letters to the veterans that would be distributed during Mail Call almost every hand in the classroom instantly went up.

I, for one, thought it would be a lovely thing to do. I know my grandfather went on the Honor Flight a while back and he loved it. There was a lot of buzz about it, because there wasn’t too much time before the deadline was up.

When I wrote the letters, I was so happy, I was almost crying. I was just overjoyed that I would be able to write to them and possibly maybe even make their day. I know my grandfather loved seeing the WWII memorial, and I know the others from our state must have too. It must have been amazing to see something like that.

It really is wonderful isn’t it? To get a chance to see something you didn’t think you’d ever be able to see. To do something you didn’t think you’d ever be able to do. To be able to go back and see the difference you’ve made in everyone’s lives.  The Honor Flight Network gives veterans the incredible opportunity to see everything they dreamed of. That to me is truly amazing.
