Class offered for national ski patrol
Outdoor enthusiasts age 16 and older are invited to enroll in the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Course being offered at Minocqua Winter Park. The class will meet weekly on a time and day to best fit the needs of interested participants to be determined May 3 at the first class session at 9 a.m.
The course will run approximately 20 weeks with sessions of three to four hours each with additional home study required. Instructors from area ski patrols will instruct the class. This course is required for both Alpine and Nordic ski patrols.
The course is designed to train members of the general public for emergency care in a wide variety of outdoor settings. No previous medical training or experience is necessary. Attendance at the weekly course sessions and successful completion of both written and practical exams will be required to pass the OEC course.
In addition to training members of the National Ski Patrol, this program has evolved to address the needs of other outdoor-based emergency care providers, including wilderness medical technicians, river rafting and mountaineering guides, members of search and rescue groups, mountain bike patrollers, and parks and recreation employees. Some governmental agencies may also recognize this training for volunteer service in disaster relief programs.
Completion of the class does not automatically ensure membership or approved volunteer status in any local recreational club or facility. For example, candidates interested in serving as ski patrollers should contact their local downhill or cross-country ski areas, which are generally in need of volunteers and may have their own individual protocols and training requirements.
Completion of a cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class for health care providers is also required by the National Ski Patrol and will be provided by this course. Ski and rescue toboggan training are provided by individual ski areas.
