YMCA offers free fitness assessments for active older adults

The YMCA in Rhinelander will be offering free fitness assessments for active older adults Wednesday, April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m.

“The Senior Fitness Test is a battery of test items that measure the physical capacity of older adults to perform normal everyday activities” Marilyn Duschl Active Older Adult Coordinator, said. “Most of us would agree that quality of life in later years depends to a large degree on being able to do the things we want to do, without pain, for as long as possible.”

The Senior Fitness Test is a battery of functional fitness tests that measure flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, dynamic balance and aerobic endurance. The test was designed to assess physical performance in older adults across a wide range of age groups (60 to 90 years old) and ability levels.
Functional fitness is defined as having the physical capacity to perform normal everyday activities safely and independently without undue fatigue. As a person ages the focus shifts from health promotion to functional mobility. Upon completion of the test participants will receive feedback which will provide education and motivation to set goals for continued physical activity.

The assessment will take approximately 45 minutes.

Dress for physical activity with comfortable clothing and gym shoes.

For more information about the assessment, contact Marilyn Duschl at mduschl@ymcanw.org or 715-362-9622 x118.
