Questionable: I have a private well; should I keep my water running?

People in town are running their water continuously so pipes don’t freeze. I have a private well; should I be doing this as well?

-Beverly, Rhinelander

We asked Mark DeBrock, owner of Webster Well Drilling, this question. He responded:

“We have had to thaw out a couple of private well pipes this winter but as a rule, there is nothing to worry about. As long as there is snow cover over the pipes coming into the house, they should be fine. The pipes we have had to thaw ran under driveways and sidewalks so they were more susceptible to freezing.”
