Rhinelander District Library finishes its 2013 Author Series Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. with Wisconsin author Michael Leannah. His book, Something for Everyone: Memories of Lauerman Brothers Department Store was recently published by Wisconsin Historical Society Press.
Leannah will discuss the “golden age of department stores,” tracing the nearly 100-year history of the Lauerman Brothers Department Store and its importance to Marinette and many other counties in northern Wisconsin and the UP.
Lauermans was well known for its “devotion to offering diverse merchandise, superior customer service, and employee loyalty….A Marinette native and onetime Lauermans employee himself, author Michael Leannah draws on his extensive research and interviews with former staff and customers to create a unique tapestry of family, business, and community history. He takes readers on a nostalgic tour of the store’s most memorable and delightful features, from the plethora of merchandise offered to the record-listening booths to the famous “frosted malt” ice cream cones.
Leannah recently retired from a long career in the public schools of Milwaukee and Sheboygan, primarily at the elementary level. His stories for children have been published in magazines in the United States and in Australia, including Highlights for Children, and he has performed for children and families with his guitar, banjo, and other instruments. His radio plays have won national awards and have been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. In 2007, he edited Well! Reflections on the Life and Career of Jack Benny.
He currently writes fiction and nonfiction, for children and adults. Leannah grew up in Marinette within walking distance of Lauermans Department Store.
