Viewpoint: Writer questions what the shutdown accomplished
Editor:
We’re relieved the government shutdown finally ended but we sure have mixed feelings about the whys and wherefores.
Yes an economic catastrophe was avoided…for what? What was the end goal? Looks to us that one Senator decided to see how much fun and power he could have at the expense of Government, our economy and our lives…for no great reason and absolutely no productive end. It felt like a terrorist plan: holding hostages till they get their way.
Here’s the thing: Cruz and gang caused $24 billion dollars, according to S&P index, to be thrown to the wind for a totally stupid political stunt. Just think of the programs that could have used that money: Head Start, Meals on Wheels, Medical and Science research, Center for Disease Control etc, funds all cut by the Sequester…$24 billion dollars. It’s unbelievable and unacceptable.
This has got to stop. No person or small group of Congressmen should ever have that kind of freedom to play games with all of our lives, ever again. Period.
We need to be certain to never allow this sort of grand standing to happen again.
No wonder so many people are plain disgusted, disappointed, and disturbed by these Congressmen/women who don’t seem to have an ounce of sense, let alone a sense of service to the people who elect them.
Find out what your Senator/ Congress Representative voted last night, ie Sen.
Johnson voted “no” against ending the government shutdown. Keep that in your head when you go to vote for our next Wisconsin Senator.
Voting is still our right to choose who will truly work for us and definitely we must out vote the Republicans next year. Yes, we are angry with the Tea Party and their leaders and intend to end their short careers when we go to the polls in 2014.
