Our Turn: Local Music is an inspiration
Music is an incredible thing. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said “Music is universal the language of mankind.” It has the power to bring people together with just a few notes or a couple beats. No matter what music you enjoy or even if you don’t normally like listening to music, listening to music can bring a group of people together. Music is all around us, in our cars, homes, in stores and on our mobile devices.
Although music is all around us, nothing can compare to listening to live music. An incredible live performance I saw was when Hip Pocket played at the Balloon Festival in Wausau. Going to see a professional band live has shown me that playing live is how a musician can show their true talent.
The effort I put into perfecting my work as a musician and the commitment of the audience, showing up time after time to show their support, is what I enjoy most about playing live music. When I work hard at perfecting my music the greatest gratification I feel is the support of an audience who appreciates my work.
Being a good musician takes a lot of effort and time other than having a natural ability. Simply going out and listening to a musician is a great way to show your appreciation of their effort and to get involved in your community. In doing this we can find a common interest in each other. This commonality doesn’t only have to be music; the music is a way for us to gather.
I have been listening to many great local musicians since a young age and I feel it has greatly influenced me to become a musician and it continues to push me to become a better musician. Also, playing music with many of these great musicians in coffeehouses and in crowded basements has influenced my music greatly.
My father has been in multiple bands that I have been surrounded by my whole life. I have also been lucky to make friends with other great musicians in the local area that I greatly enjoy listening to. There are many opportunities to support local music in our community. Nicolet has many great musicians play as do many of the local coffeehouses like Northern Coffee Haus and Coffee Beans etc. as well as many restaurants.
Many of our community events and festivals host local music, these are great ways to get involved in the community. I urge you to go listen to a few of these local musicians whenever you get the chance.
