The Alzheimer’s Association’s Regional Fall Education Conference will be Wednesday, Nov, 13, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northwoods Banquet Center, 1540 Pueblo Drive in Rhinelander. Exhibitor space is available.

This year’s conference features Viki Kind from Los Angeles, Calif. Kind is a clinical bioethicist, medical educator and hospice volunteer.

Her award-winning book, “The Caregiver’s Path to Compassionate Decision making: Making Choices for Those Who Can’t,” guides families and professionals through the difficult process of making decisions for those who have lost capacity.

She has lectured across the United States teaching healthcare professionals to have integrity, compassion and to improve end-of-life care through better communication. Kind holds a master’s degree in bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The opening session will feature Patricia Ribbich and Charlene Smith who will speak on “American Indian Culture: Identification & Treatment of Alzheimer’s.” Ribbich is a retired social worker from Milwaukee and is Ojibwa and Ottawa. Smith is a retired registered nurse and a member of the Oneida Tribe.

To close the afternoon, Dr. Christopher Koeppl, from Ministry Medical Group in Rhinelander will speak on ‘Understanding the Other Dementias.’ Koeppl specializes in internal medicine and was responsible for establishing the Northern Wisconsin Memory Diagnostic Clinic in Rhinelander.

Registration is available online at www.alz.org/gwwi or call 715-362-7779.

Registration fees are $550 for professionals and $45 for family caregivers and students. Registration includes the conference sessions, lunch and refreshments. Registration deadline is Oct. 31, 2013. Certificates of Attendance will be provided and CEUs will be available through Nicolet College.
