The Y will be celebrating Active Aging Week Sept. 30 to Oct. 5 with a variety of programs for those 55 years of age and older.

“The Y is committed to providing programs and classes that have the active senior in mind,” Marilyn Duschl Active Older Adult Coordinator said. “We have more than 600 senior members who participate in group exercise classes, wellness center workouts, aquatic classes and educational and social events.”

The Y is extending an invitation to other seniors in the community to receive a free week guest pass at the Y. The week guest pass will give anyone 55 years old and older the opportunity to participate in senior exercise classes and free workouts.

Classes include the SilverSneakers ROM, SilverSneakers Cardio Circuit, Total Body for Seniors, Men’s Stretching, Moving for Better Balance and the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program.

In addition the Y will be hosing some fun special events that week. On Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a Pizza Pot Luck and a speaker. Those coming are asked to bring a pizza topping or a dessert to share.

Kyla Waksmonski, a member of the Northwoods LEAN Coalition, will present information on the work that is being done to reduce chronic disease in Oneida and Vilas Counties

On Thursday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. there will be a special free showing of the “Age of Champions” at the Rouman Theater. The “Age of Champions” is an award-winning documentary following five competitors who sprint, leap, and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics. See how they discover the power of the human spirit and triumph over the limitations of age.

At noon information will be available about resources for seniors in the area. A representative from the Aging and Disability Resource Center,
Rennes Health & Rehab Center, and the YMCA will be on hand to provide information. Free popcorn and a soft drink will be provided by Rennes Health and Rehab Center. No tickets for this event are required.

To participate in the group land and water exercise classes and Wellness Center workouts during Active Aging Week, pick up your free guest pass at the YMCA located at 2203 East Winnebago Street, Rhinelander. Additional information and a schedule of classes will be available.

For more information, call the Y at 715-362-9622.
