The Rhinelander District Library continues its popular 2013 Author Series on Monday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. with a Local Authors Night. Three Northwoods authors, Jeffrey Vollmer, Peter Hubin and Kevin McCullough, will share their writing experiences and discuss their books. The meet-and-greet and book signing with all three authors will begin at 6 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

Minocqua resident Jeffrey Vollmer’s first novel, Faded Gray, is a modern-day “wild Eastern.” It is the first in a series that explores intercultural life, international crime, potential for Peace Corps use for nefarious purposes and other fascinating topics. The story follows U.S. Peace Corps volunteer Grayson Palmer as he intersects with Azerbaijani, Armenian and Arab criminal worlds six years after the fall of the Soviet Union. Described as an international thriller, Faded Gray is sure to please a variety of readers who are looking for a story that is nuanced, has a strong plot and is filled with a diverse cast of characters.

A Brook Runs through It is Peter Hubin’s fourth novel. Based on the local history of his home in Spooner, it takes place in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II. In this “coming of age” story with a Northwoods twist, 14-year-old Nick is allowed by his parents to spend his 14th summer camping alone in the nearby woods. Nick befriends a girl his own age as well as a World War II veteran severely injured during the battle of Iwo Jima. He keeps a diary of their interactions, as well as his discoveries about the forest and its inhabitants, and the interesting people he meets during his adventure.

Writing as K.R. Mack, Presque Isle resident Kevin McCullough’s first novel, Treehouse, is a mystery/thriller set in northern Wisconsin. It follows Detective Henry Sauter as he works to solve a string of child murders eerily similar to the killing of a young boy he investigated years ago as a rookie cop. Demons have chased Sauter since that fateful night. With a spate of new, but similar murders, he is now in a life-and-death race to solve the murders, while still dealing with his persistent demons. Treehouse is a semifinalist for the 2013 Best Indie Book Awards in the mystery/thriller genre. Finalists will be announced in September and an overall winner named in October.

The library held its first-ever Local Authors Night last year, and it was so popular that it was decided to host this event again, with three new authors. Funding for this event is provided by Northern Arts Council. Call the Rhinelander District Library at (715) 365-1070 with any questions.
