Oneida Senior Center Activities for September 2013
New or beginner Participants are always welcome to attend any of the following programs.
All programs are held at the Oneida County Senior Center, 100 W. Keenan St. (next to Trig’s Riverwalk Centre) unless otherwise noted. Arts/Crafts
Crafter’s Circle: Meets every second and fourth, Tuesday Sept. 10 and 24, at 1 p.m. Share your love of hand made items and crafting! We will be finishing work on some intergenerational projects to give to the kids at Old School Arts and Learning – crocheted “Book Worm” bookmarks, or hand-stamped and laminated bookmarks. We will also be working on paper beaded jewelry. Wonderfully simple but very nice looking. Please feel free to bring in projects you still want to finish up. You are welcome to just come in to socialize and work on or share your own projects. A knitting group also congregates during this time to work on their own projects. We are always looking for others to lead new projects!
Cards/Games
Card Club: Every Friday afternoon 1 to 4 p.m. Come play 500, Bridge, Pinochle or anything else we have players for. Refreshments served. Annual fee of $2 plus 50 cents per week.
Cribbage: Thursday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Judy Matteson and Betty Hargraves will also teach beginners who want to learn.
Duplicate Bridge: Wednesday afternoons 12:30 to 4 p.m., new players always welcomed. For more info call Rose at 715-369-2272 or Flo at 715-362-6536.
Mahjong: (Ancient Chinese tile game) -Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until noon. New players are encouraged, Judy and Betty will teach you.
Educational
Creative Writing Classes: Friday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Taught by Jan Lambele (retired teacher), who volunteers to instruct this popular class including short stories, poetry and other interesting English class assignments. On summer break. Class will resume on Sept. 6.
Fitness
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program: Tuesday and Thursday mornings 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. or Mondays and Wednesdays 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. Seated and standing exercise class focusing on range of motion, strength and flexibility exercises led by certified instructor, Susie Wegner. Exercise class punch cards are $20 for any 10 classes, get the 11th free. Good for any exercise classes at the Senior Center.
Country/Line Dancing: Join instructor Nancy Rosera 715-362-2244, for a summer/fall session of line dancing every Thursday from 1:30 until 3 p.m.. There is no charge.
Feel Younger With Yoga: Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:45 – 2:30 p.m. Chair yoga poses taught by Susie Wegner. Exercise class punch cards are $20 for any 10 classes get the 11th free. Good for any exercise classes at the Senior Center.
Gentle Fitness Class: Wednesday and Friday mornings 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Group exercise following award winning senior fitness DVD byCatherine (MacRae) Joppa (Rhinelander resident). Seated and standing exercises. No Cost.
Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi: Tuesday mornings from 11 to noon. Warm-up and cool-down exercises, six basic core movements and six advanced extension movements, direction changes to add challenge. Taught by certified instructors, Judy Matteson and Lois Kasmarek. Exercise class punch cards are $20 for any 10 classes, get the 11th free. Good for any exercise classes at the Senior Center.
Wii Fitness: Older adults are welcome to use the Senior Center’s Wii console and giant flat screen TV for Wii bowling, golf, boxing, tennis or Wii Fittness program and step platform, whenever the room is unscheduled. Call the Center before coming or check in at the front desk.
Zumba Gold: Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. Dance exercise for older active adults set to international rhythms including cha cha, mambo, merengue, cumbia, belly dance, hava nagila and more. Zumba Gold is not as intense as other Zumba sessions but is still a good workout and includes stretching and balance elements. Led by certified Zumba Gold instructor, Stephanie Schroeder. Exercise class punch cards are $20 for any 10 classes get the 11th free. Good for any exercise classes at the Senior Center.
Wellness
Alzheimer’s Caregivers’ Support Group: Meets third Thursday (Aug. 22nd), 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Greater Wisconsin Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Anyone with a loved one with any kind of memory loss is welcomed to attend. Respite care available to allow caregivers to attend meeting. Please call ahead at least 2 days for this service.
Foot Care: Basic foot care provided by Shirley Ryan from Aspirus VNA Home Health, Inc. for $23. APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED.
Oneida Co. Parkinson’s Support Group: Meets third Monday Sept. 16 from 1 p.m. until 2:30. Led by Norma Semling. Resource information as well as monthly speakers on topics of interest to individuals and families faced with Parkinson disease.
V.I.P. Support Group (Visually Impaired Persons): Meets third Tuesday Sept. 17 1 to 2:30 p.m. for persons dealing with vision loss. Led by Jim Unger, Rehabilitation Specialist, Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Miscellaneous
Waffle Breakfast – Join us on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 8 to 10 a.m. for a free waffle breakfast along with an educational presentation, “Staying Safe in Your Home” brought to you by Rennes Health and Rehab Center. Please call 715-369-6170 for reservations (must stay for presentation).
Senior Center Book Club: Meeting this month on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. Selection will be “Raise the Titanic” by Clive Cussler. Call the Rhinelander District Library 715-365-1070 to reserve your copy or check the website at www.rhinelanderlibrary.org. Book World will give registered club members 20 percent off the club’s selected titles.
September is National Senior Center Month: Come in and try any class at the Center during the week of Sept. 16 through Sept. 20 FREE! Get a grand tour and check out all the opportunities (including volunteering) the Center has to offer.
Fire Prevention Presentation: Who better than the fire department to educate you on fire prevention in your home. Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 24th at 1 p.m. From your furnace to your smoke detector batteries – find out what you should do now.
