Obituary: Julius J. Barkus

Julius J. Barkus, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. He was born June 17, 1921, in Chicago to Julius and Antoinette (Czazesnick) Barkus. Julius served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Rhinelander where he owned and operated Barkus Resort on Lake George for more than 40 years. He was also employed by the Rhinelander Paper Company where he worked handling logs in the mill pond. He loved hunting and fishing. Julius is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Marcia) Barkus of Rhinelander; two grandchildren, Morgan Barkus of Miami, Fla. and Jed (DeAnn) Barkus of Rhinelander; and two great grandchildren, Dawsyn and Jatyn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice on March 9, 2011; a daughter, Susan on March 8, 2013; two sisters; and one brother. Private services have been held. Carlson Funeral Home is assisting the Barkus family with arrangements.
