Viewpoint: Writer supports police collective bargaining
Editor:
On 7-30-13, Gov. Walker stated that he was open to limiting the bargaining rights of the police unions. Howls of outrage were heard from the police commissioner who had supported Walkers attacks on the public sector unions bargaining rights, provided Walker left the police alone. Surprise, surprise, what did he expect? This is a republican, part of the crowd working tirelessly to limit the wages and benefits of the worker in order to enhance profits for their employers. That he will attack workers wages and benefits is a given, his promises notwithstanding. The commissioner should have recognized that. He should also have remembered a statement of Benjamin Franklin. “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately” The commissioner made the mistake of separating himself from the working class in the hopes of avoiding the same attack. He is now learning what all herds know, only a united front will protect everyone in the herd from the attacking predator, in this case, the republican politician. The working class needed to present a united front in order to protect the American Dream for their children. The republican voter felt it was more important to dictate the private lives of millions of people they will never know. Now we are all hanging separately.
