Fourteen year old Lauryn Cook represented the Northern States at the 2013 State Games of America by carrying the torch in the opening ceremony as well as competing in the Pre-Bronze Dance, Swing and a Pre-Juvenile Freestyle events.
Lauryn took 5th place in both events.

Hyleas Fountain, 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist in Track and Field, accompanied Lauryn in the Opening Ceremony. Lauryn’s mom, Tracy, stated that the best moment of the Opening was when they announced Lauryn and the whole crowd from Wisconsin stood up and cheered for her. Wisconsin has 110 athletes representing the State. Tracy also noted that “seeing Lauryn’s picture on the jumbotron was unbelievable.”

The 2013 State Games of America, held in Hershey PA, is an amature Olympic style event. There are over 10,000 athletes representing 41 states in 26 events. Over 1,000 United States Figures Skating Association skaters are registered for this event, which takes place July 31 through August 4.

A participation criterion for Wisconsin skaters is medaling at the Badger State games.
