Journeys Marathon this weekend; runner attempting to break world record
The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center has announced that a participant in the Journeys Marathon set for Saturday, May 11, is attempting to break the current Guinness World Record. Trent Morrow of Sydney, Australia, known as The Marathon Man, is a 40-year-old runner embarking on the challenge of a lifetime by attempting to claim the Guinness World Record for the most marathons run in a calendar year.
The currently recognized Guinness World record is 114 marathons and was set on Dec. 31, 2011. A subsequent claim for the record has been made for a total of 157 marathons in the calendar year ending December 2012. This new claim is yet to be assessed by the Guinness organization.
Marathon Man’s vision is to compete in more than 160 official marathons in the calendar year ending Dec. 31, 2013.
The official start date for Morrow’s endeavor was Jan. 1, 2013, in Houston, Texas, and the official end date will be Dec. 31, 2013, in Jackson, Miss. All events will be official 42.195 km (26.2 mile) marathons. Marathons will be run in more than 20 countries this year, with a minimum average of three marathons per week throughout the year.
Marathon Man has already run in 43 marathons in 2013, including a stretch of marathons 12 days in a row within the state of California during March. He is currently traveling to Eagle River from his most recent marathon in Cincinnati, Ohio. More information about Marathon Man may be found at marathonman.com.au.
The public is invited to attend the Journey’s Marathon event Saturday in Eagle River and cheer on Marathon Man and all other participants at the finish line in Riverview Park across the street from the chamber of commerce building.
